Tranquil Retreat

The house and surrounding gardens were designed to take full advantage of the mild, Mediterranean climate where outdoor entertaining is a year-round activity. The woodland gardens of heritage oaks, pines and sweet gum trees reflect the rustic, architectural character of the house. Pools of white iris and blue agapanthus edge the woodland areas where dogwood and Japanese maples provide seasonal interest under the tree canopy. The secluded, tropical pool and spa garden, replete with five water features, is an alluring view from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room and study above.

Handcrafted fences and gates grace the boundaries of the gardens, and a herringbone-patterned brick patio under a wisteria-covered arbor welcome the visitor to the family entry garden. Rustic stone, raised-vegetable beds provide the family with summer produce, and the herb garden is conveniently located near the kitchen in the family entry garden. The barbecue area is a dream come true for the serious grillsman, with several types of grills and smokers, storage for specialty woods, and a rustic outdoor kitchen with a concrete countertop and sink.

The lawn in the expansive parkway has been replaced by a more drought-tolerant ground cover and the new plantings that edge the sidewalk are intentionally kept low to create a pleasant and shaded walkway for pedestrians. The succulent ‘planters’ in the parkway at the main entry intentionally use a selection of green plants only, providing the owner with a water-wise alternative to a lawn.
